🛥 Route Summary (Return Paddle)
- Launch → Rat Island (~4.3 km south-east): Head south-east from the boat ramp following the numbered navigation beacons across open Lake Alexandrina. Rat Island appears at approximately 4.3 km. This is the most wind-exposed section — assess conditions throughout.
- Rat Island → Point A — Boundary Creek Entry (~1 km further): The creek entrance is behind Rat Island at Point A (GPS: 35.5298 S; 138.9669 E). Look for the unlit navigation beacon — the entrance can be obscured by reeds. Water is shallow inside the creek. Islands are privately owned. Other nearby creeks are not navigable.
- Point A → Ewe Island Barrage (~3.5 km): Follow Boundary Creek to the Ewe Island barrage. Suitable lunch stop. Return the same way to Clayton Bay.
⚠️ Key Cautions
- Wind on open lake: Lake Alexandrina is shallow and exposed. Winds build quickly. Check BOM before departure and turn back if conditions deteriorate on the water.
- No tree cover: No shade on this trail. Sun protection is essential for the full day.
- Boundary Creek entrance: May be obscured by reeds. Locate the unlit navigation beacon near the entrance. Paddle slowly inside — water is shallow and reeds are abundant.
- Private land: The islands on either side of Boundary Creek are privately owned. Other creeks in the area are not navigable due to reeds.
- Semi-protected waters: The lake section is classified as semi-protected waters under SA boating legislation. Ensure appropriate safety equipment for your vessel.
